Under the Bed Art Sale

Sun 4th - Sat 10th February

The upstairs floor at Montage Place in Ryde was jam packed with more than 1,000 pieces of original artworks and offered the chance to affordably start or continue to build your art collections. The works for sale were all from exhibited artists currently working on the Island, many of whom have exhibited nationally and internationally and amongst them, several recipients of prestigious awards. The purpose of the sale was to provide artists with an opportunity to pull out artworks from storage and sell them off at reduced prices to help clear space in their studios.

Christmas Musical Comedy

Sat 16th to Sun 17th December

Tide Nor Time Players CIC presented their all new, Christmas musical comedy, Lance McKrack and the Dr X. Mass Adventure

Lance McKrack and his trusty crew must battle the evil Professor Brainovski to save Dr X. Mass before it’s too late and Christmas is stolen from the galaxy. Join our intrepid heroes as they rock their way through the solar system, battle evil cyborgs and try to over-come the dark forces that may destroy the yuletide forever! Lance McKrack and the Dr X. Mass Adventure is a wholly Island production with original music and characters in the grand tradition of classic 1950’s science fiction films like Forbidden Planet. There will be an eclectic mix of music, comedy, silliness for the kids and just enough bawdy humour for the adults. Candy Cassidy who played Jane Calloway in the Molly Downer musical will be starring as Lance McKrack opposite Carys Broome as the evil Professor Brainovski in this stellar, Christmas adventure. “Probably the most bonkers musical of the festive season,” said writer and director Paul A.T. Wilson. “We pride ourselves on creating original content and we decided that if you can’t be completely over the top at Christmas, when can you be? Being a huge fan of classic sci-fi films and having a deep love of pantomimes, I decided to merge the two in this outrageous Christmas spectacular.” Cast: Candy Cassidy (Lance McKrack), Carys Broome (Professor Brainovski), Simon Bucher-Jones (Gladys Pearlclutcher), Linda O’Connor (Dr X. Mass), Jack Brading (Funky Fanny), Freddie Holme (Luce Leggs), Marilyn Bersey (Cookie), Julian Gabriel Clarke (MC Sheeza Phreak), Aaron Danvers-Jukes (General Arash), Polly Wray, George Wilson and Holly Wilson (Space Goblins) and introducing Olivia Padina-Gray as Ignatius Inferno. TIDE NOR TIME PLAYERS CIC have built their reputation on performing new and all original shows and this is no exception. They have blended classic shlock sci-fi and the British tradition of pantomimes into this new Christmas adventure. All proceeds go towards our mission to provide an open and supportive environment that promotes diversity and inclusion through performing arts. Our focus is to put on new and original performances that are wholly written/adapted and produced within the Isle of Wight community. https://www.tidenortime.uk/lance-mckrack

Needles In The Groove: 80 years of IOW vinyl records

Monday 20th November 2023

This exciting exhibition bought together eighty years of Isle of Wight music for the very first time. The event, featured vinyl by modern hitmakers such as Wet Leg and Coach Party as well as musicians from yesteryear like Level 42, The Bees, Craig Douglas and the Isle of Wight Cherokees. Dozens of rare records and related ephemera were displayed at Montage Place, for three weeks, all with an island connection. The earliest 78rpm records date back to the 1940s. The free display was put together by island record label Wight Vinyl, with support from Newport shop AAA Records. Wight Vinyl’s Andy Barding said: “We want to celebrate the island’s musical output by drawing the many strands together and putting a representative sample of this vast body of work on show for the first time. “Most of the records displayed were bought from island shops or directly from the artists and their record companies. Some were recovered from within piles of dusty discs in charity shops and at car boot sales. Others were borrowed from private collectors, or sourced online. “They span eight decades of recorded sound… and a multitude of styles. Through the 20th and 21st centuries, Isle of Wight records have immortalised classical, folk, rock, pop, punk, alternative and country music – as well as the spoken word and ambient sounds of passing trains. Records have been made of artists performing at the Isle of Wight festivals. And there’s even a million-seller celebration of the 1969 festival in both French and Italian. “In many cases, the records have outlived the people who made the sounds. Which makes them all the more important. Some of these releases are already very, very obscure. Without context, they could easily slip into permanent anonymity. That would be a crime.”

Breathing and Vocal Exercise class with Annalisa

Mondays @ 11am 2023

We were delighted to host his course of six sessions which was enjoyed by many at the Depozitory. Drawing from years of experience as Opera singer and Voice Coach, meditation, coping with and supporting individuals with mental health difficulties, and martial arts to some extent, Annalisa has developed a method of vocal coaching which involves deep breathing exercises that focus on the expansion of the soft palate, meditative imagery to relax the mind and build up the ability to stretch inner muscles, stimulating the vagus nerve through the vibration of breath and humming, humming exercises channelled towards the clearance of sinuses and relaxation of muscles, and finally, light vocal exercises, which strengthen vocal ability, as well as stimulate the vagus nerve. The exercises are accompanied by gentle movements and stretches very similar to Tai Chi. These are designed to enrich visualisation of how we turn inhalation into physical energy and channel it through the body, but are excellent for strengthening joints and promoting elasticity. Vocal exercises are not just for singers and actors! (Although, if you are a singer or an actor, these classes are an excellent and affordable way to manage nerves and improve your tone!) In the aftermath of Covid-19, most adults will have experienced a negative change in their breath control and vocal strength. If you have experienced chest infections or Covid itself, a course of deep breathing and vocal exercise will improve lung health; but not all breath control issues are connected to poor health: poor breathing is generally a biproduct of a tired body and a stressed mind, therefore, a visit to the GP may neither be necessary nor helpful, so that is where vocal coaching comes in. Annalisa will teach you how to retrain yourself to breathe efficiently, relax the mind, project your voice in a way that makes you feel empowered and energised rather than tired, and balance your senses including how to listen in a way that balances and relaxes your face and neck muscles. And if you sing or act, the class will be exploring vocal strength and how to achieve clarity at the extremities of the vocal register.

An Evening with John Robb

Sat 30th September 2023

Montage Place were delighted to collaborate with AAA Records who promoted this event.

After a decade of work, countless interviews and a deep dive into the enduring culture that is the art of darkness, broadcaster, musician and author John Robb has published the first full biography of the goth scene.

From  Byron to Bauhaus, from the fall of Rome to the emergence of  TikTok, the  darkest of countercultures has a heck of a story to tell.

John  sat down with all the alternative anti-heroes you can imagine  to  produce his newest book: Andrew Eldritch, Killing Joke, Bauhaus, The   Cult, The Banshees, The Damned, Einsturzende Neubauten, Danielle Dax,   Johnny Marr, Trent Reznor, Adam Ant, Laibach, The Cure, Nick Cave and   many others.

John gave us all an evening to remember when he discussed the scene in his own stylish way at this intimate event. There was a Q&A, smusic and a goth-flavoured  pop-up AAA record stall to entertain all who joined.
